Biography

The Sylvies have been making music in the Chicagoland area for over 30 years. The band's founder (and current leader), Armand James Sylvie, was born and raised on Cane River, Louisiana (near the town of Natchitoches). There he refined his natural talent for singing and playing guitar in the heart of the rich French Creole culture and heritage of that historic region. Armand (aka "Jesse" and "Brother" to family and friends) is truly a native son of the Creole community of Cane River. In the 1950s, Armand left the cotton fields of Louisiana and traveled north to Chicago. Upon arrival, he began workin' days and performing nights in live music venues throughout the city and surrounding areas. It wasn't long before Armand met his bride (Judith) and started a family in Chicago. He shared his culture and instilled his love of music into his six children and eventually established a family band through which he could blend his talents with those of his children and other talented musicians. Thus "The Sylvies" band was born. Throughout the years the energy and quality entertainment provided by this band has remained constant. Audiences are entertained with a soulful and eclectic mix of cover tunes and original compositions steeped in the traditions of American Roots music. Rich harmonies interwoven with energetic musicianship showcase this family's natural talent. A typical set by "The Sylvies" might include The Blues, Zydeco, Gospel, Swamp Pop, Traditional Country, Roots Rock n Roll, Rhythm and Blues, Motown, Modern, New Orleans, or heart warming down on the bayou music. It's all stirred together and roped with enough red pepper to get audiences up and cuttin' the rug or singing along to an old forgotten favorite song. It's good-time music - family style! At present, with the addition of Armand's grandson on the drums, three generations of the Sylvie family grace the stage at a "Sylvies" show. As Individuals and as a group "The Sylvies" have performed in a multitude of settings and venues over the years. Some highlights include Armand recording at the legendary Chess Studios in Chicago and the release of his first full length CD (Night Before Last) in 2000. Band members have toured in North Dakota, New York State, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Texas and Louisiana. A very short list (in the interest of time and the prevention of carpel tunnel Syndrome) of venues played and concerts of note include Taste of Chicago, Cadillac Ranch, The Cubby Bear, The Beat Kitchen, A&J's Lounge, Southwind Saloon, The Parkway Ballroom, The Pheasant Run Resort, The Palmer House, Indian Lakes Country Club, The Cannonball Tap and a multitude of dance and banquet halls. The Sylvies love to play music and are equally at home in the intimacy of a small room as they are on the largest concert stage.
