THE SYLVIES

3 generations of talent

The Sylvies have been described as "a cookin' jam band with a Louisiana good time feel and a true Chicago grit"......"but they'll make ya cry in your beer once in a while too". You may also find yourself singin' along to an old forgotten favorite tune or cuttin' the rug out on the dance floor as three generations of Sylvies rip through an unpredictable set of music drawn from many eras and genres.

Hello everyone....we had a great show at Keglers Crest Hill on June 29th. Thanks to the great staff at Keglers who are some genuinely nice folks! and thanks to United Talent Co. for setting up the show! It was great to see some old friends as well as making some new ones!

The Salernos show on August 24th was a blast.....weather was perfect for playing outdoors and it was lovely to see so many friends, fam & fans having a great time out there! We've been asked to come back and play there again....that show is set up for November 23rd! Big thanks to Salerno's for having us back!

Next stop for the band was Taste of Holy Rosary Church, 612 N. Western Ave. in Chicago. The gig was on a rainy Sunday afternoon....but we didn't let that stop us....we ripped through an energetic set after the rain delay and all had a fine time....we stuck around after the show to eat tamales and dance the salsa as well....lots of fun!

Hope to see you all at Salerno's on November 23rd!

Thanks for all your support!

The Sylvies

Chicago grit stuffed in a cotton sack

The Sylvies have been making music in the Chicagoland area for many years now. The band's founder, Armand James Sylvie, was born and raised on Cane River, Louisiana (the nearest big town is Natchitoches, LA.). There he refined his natural talent for singing and playing guitar in the heart of the rich French Creole culture of that historic region. Armand (aka "Jesse" and "Brother" to family and friends) is truly a native son of the Creole community of Cane River.

In the 1950s, Armand threw down the cotton sack and hopped a train north to Chicago lookin' for better work.

Upon arrival, he began workin' days and performing nights in music venues throughout the city and surrounding areas. It wasn't long before Armand met his bride (Judith) and started a family in Chicago. He shared his culture and instilled his love of music into his six children and eventually established a family band through which he could blend his talents with those of his children and other talented musicians. Thus "The Sylvies" band was born.

Throughout the years the energy and quality entertainment provided by this band has remained constant. Audiences are entertained with a soulful and eclectic mix of cover tunes and original compositions steeped in the traditions of American Roots music. Rich harmonies interwoven with energetic musicianship showcase this family's natural talent.

A typical set by "The Sylvies" might include The Blues, Zydeco, Traditional Country, Roots Rock n Roll, R&B, Motown, Modern, New Orleans, Classic Rock, or heart warming down on the bayou music. It's all stirred together and roped with enough red pepper to get audiences up and cuttin' the rug or singing along to an old forgotten favorite song. It's good-time music - family style!

At present, with the addition of Armand's granddaughter on vocals/sax, three generations of the Sylvie family grace the stage at a "Sylvies" show. As Individuals and as a group "The Sylvies" have performed in a multitude of settings and venues over the years. Some highlights include Armand recording at the legendary Chess Studios in Chicago and the bands performance and interview on WGN Radio's Nocturnal Journal.

Band members have toured in North Dakota, New York State, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Texas and Louisiana. A very short list (in the interest of time and the prevention of carpel tunnel Syndrome) of venues played and concerts of note include Taste of Chicago, Cadillac Ranch, The Cubby Bear, The Beat Kitchen, A&J's Lounge, Southwind Saloon, The Nachitoches LA. Meat Pie Festival and WKZB radio interview, The Pheasant Run Resort, The Cannonball Tap and a multitude of dance and banquet halls. The Sylvies love to play music and are equally at home in the intimacy of a small room as they are on the largest concert stage.
